Chongwe River House

Lower Zambezi, Zambia

This large new four bedroom house sleeps eight, and sits on the banks of the Chongwe River. The enormous sitting room and bedrooms look out over the deck and pool to a spectacular view of river and mountains beyond. The river is the main water source and you will be able to watch game feeding and watering throughout the day. There are walking safaris, canoes and boats for river activities, a wide range of hosted activities for children (minimum age 7), and a child minder.

Elephants in the Zambezi

  • Location:

The Lower Zambezi National Park was for many years a forgotten wilderness although it covers an exceptionally beautiful 4,092 square kilometres with a dramatic backdrop of the steeply rising Zambezi Escarpment. The lure of the mighty Zambezi River means the surrounding area is superb game-viewing country. Elephant, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard and huge herds of Cape Buffalo are resident here, together with impala, Puku, baboon, Vervet Monkey and Nile Crocodile. Nowhere else is there such a combination of breath-taking scenery and varied wildlife.

The Lower Zambezi is possibly best known for its boating safaris, from canoes to shaded motorised pontoons. Tranquil yet exciting, these trips are an excellent way to appreciate the Zambezi and get surprisingly close to the animals that appear unconcerned by the presence of boats, and you can also get some fabulous photographic opportunities. With six-metre long Canadian canoes and trips lasting from an hour to a whole day, the options are endless! One of the most popular canoe safaris is a gentle afternoon's paddle (always downstream!) followed by sundowners and an exciting night drive back to camp.

The properties that we work with here - Chiawa Camp, Sausage Tree Camp, Old Mondoro and Chongwe River House - all offer day and night game-viewing, walking safaris and, of course, plenty of time on the river. The area is easily accessed by charter or regular scheduled flights from Lusaka, Luangwa and Livingstone (Victoria Falls).
