Join our 21st birthday celebrations on a luxury safari to Zambia's Liuwa Plains and Kafue National Park in the company of Robin Pope and Wildlife Worldwide founder, Chris Breen.

This safari will offer exceptional photographic opportunities, and will be led (while in Liuwa Plains) by the legendary Robin Pope, one of Africa’s top safari guides.

Situated in a remote region of Western Zambia is the little-visited, vast, open grasslands and woodland of the Liuwa Plain. This immense wilderness with massive skies is simply brimming with wildlife – unusual birdlife such as pink-throated longclaws, sooty chats, black-winged pratincoles and wattled cranes mixes with the huge numbers of pelicans, spoonbills, egrets, bustards and secretary birds.

By early June, once the rains have passed through, you can see many antelope species that are rare elsewhere – such as roan, red lechwe, steinbuck, oribi and duiker – plus eland and buffalo. The predators here are significant too and include large packs of wild dog, cheetah, hyena and, thanks to a successful reintroduction programme – lions are now making a comeback.

Our visit concludes with a short stay in the northern reaches of Kafue National Park.

Typical itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK on an overnight flight to Lusaka

  2. Day 2: Arrive Lusaka, transfer to Liuwa Plain

From Lusaka International Airport, you take a charter flight to Kalabo (between one and a half and two and a half hours, depending upon aircraft). Flying over the extensive Kafue River flats, the Iteshi Iteshi dam and the Zambezi River and flood plain. On arrival in Kalabo you will cross the Luanginga River, and drive to camp (a journey of approximately two-hours). There will be an afternoon game drive, and a well-earned sundowner, before heading back to camp for dinner and the campfire. This will set the pattern for the next five days – an early start, back to camp for lunch and a late afternoon game drive. Accommodation: Matamenene Bushcamp – five nights All meals are included.
  3. Days 3-6: Explore Liuwa Plain National Park by vehicle and on foot

  4. Day 7: Transfer to Kafue National Park Liuwa Plain to Kafue National Park

We rise early, although there may be time for a final wildlife activity before we embark on the 2-hour drive back to the airstrip at Kalabo, where we board our chartered flight to Kafue. Our flight, between one and two hours, takes us over the magical world of the flooded Zambezi and we may see entire colonies of storks from the air. Phil Jeffrey will meet us at Lufupa airstrip in Kafue National Park, before boarding a boat for the 30-minute transfer to Musekese Fly Camp. Later in the afternoon we'll cross to the north bank of the river and head off for our first game drive in the Kafue. Accommodation: Musekese Fly Camp – three nights All meals are included.
  5. Days 8-9: Game drives and walks

Here the pattern continues - early morning and late afternoon game drives or wildlife walks, and ample time to relax back in camp during the heat of the day. Game drives are in comfortable open 4-wheel drive vehicles accompanied by a qualified guide. Night drives offer the unforgettable experience of exploring the bush with a spotlight to see nocturnal species such as genet, mongoose or little duiker. On walking safaris you will learn about tracking, gain an insight into the life of small mammals and insects that cannot be seen on a game drive, or experience the thrill of getting close to a herd of elephant on foot. A qualified guide and armed game scout accompany all walks.
  6. Day 10: Transfer to Livingstone and fly back to the UK via Johannesburg

After a final morning game drive or walk, we return to camp for brunch. Then it’s time to board the boat for the short transfer back to Lufupa airstrip. Here we meet a charter flight for the flight south to Livingstone, arriving in time to check in for the afternoon flight to Johannesburg in South Africa, where we connect to an overnight flight to London. Dinner this evening is not included.
