Visiting two of northern Botswana’s prime wildlife areas, this luxury mobile camping safari trip focuses on the region's endangered wild dogs, with a chance to see a variety of other wildlife including lion, leopard and elephant.

Situated along the luxuriant Khwai River, the Khwai Community Concession is a mosaic of habitats, from seasonal lagoons and acacia-studded plains to fabulous forests of leadwood. In contrast, Moremi Game Reserve - on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta - is a stunningly beautiful area of floodplain and mopane woodland that attracts a wealth of wildlife. Both locations offer exceptional opportunities to see and study the area’s most fascinating inhabitant: the African wild dog.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Maun via Johannesburg.

  2. Day 2: Arrive Maun & transfer to Khwai Community Concession

On arrival in Maun we meet our safari guide and transfer by vehicle to Khwai Community Concession for a four-night stay.

Accommodation is in spacious Sahara-style tents equipped with comfortable beds, bedding, pillows and an outdoor en suite bathroom (bucket shower and long-drop toilet). Showers can be ordered as hot, cold or warm and the water is heated in a bucket on the fire and brought to the tent.

Accommodation: Bush Lark Tented Camp, 4-nights

  3. Days 3-5 : Game drives in Khwai Concession

Fed by the waters of the Khwai River, this area attracts a high concentration of game including Burchell’s zebra, giraffe, impala and red lechwe. The river is particularly productive for large bull elephants, and elsewhere predators such as lion and leopard are encountered regularly. However, our principal focus here is the area’s wild dogs. We spend four nights at our exclusive campsite in the community area, which allows us plenty of time to enjoy game drives.

As a private concession managed by the local community, there is also an option to undertake night drives in search of African civet, common genet, lesser bush baby, African porcupine and Serval.

  4. Day 6: Transfer to Moremi Game Reserve

After an early morning breakfast we take a leisurely full-day game drive from the Khwai Concession south into Moremi Game Reserve, passing through one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango. We spend three nights in Moremi in the Xakanaxa region, which gives us ample opportunity to explore the surrounding wilderness on morning and afternoon game drives.

Accommodation: Bush Lark Tented Camp, 3-nights

  5. Days 7-8 : Game drives in Moremi Game Reserve

Situated on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled reserves in Africa, and the huge variety of wildlife here will not disappoint. This is one of the best places in Africa to see our target species - the endangered African wild dog - and the Xakanaxa area is home to a resident herd of buffalo, which in turn attracts lions. Moremi’s birdlife is also exceptional, with swamps and open areas of water attracting a variety of species.

  6. Day 9: Transfer to Maun & depart

After breakfast we transfer back to Maun Airport in time for an early afternoon flight back to the UK via Johannesburg.

  7. Day 10: Arrive UK

You should note: This is fully-serviced camping and you are not expected to help with any camp chores such as setting up tents, cooking and washing-up.
