Arctic Dreams

Classic Arctic highlights both above and below the Arctic Circle on an exploratory voyage of Greenland's east coast, the island of Spitsbergen and the stunning Norwegian coastline.

Board your expedition ship in the Icelandic port of Keflavik and set sail across Denmark Strait, passing over the submarine canyons that enrich the whale feeding grounds off Greenland's south-east coast. Wild, rugged and often icebound, the eastern coastline of Greenland is the habitat of Walrus, Polar Bear and Fur Seal. If the pack ice allows, you may reach two of the world's largest fjords, the magnificent Scoresby Sund and Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord. There will be visits to remote Inuit communities, hikes on the vast tundra and opportunities to board the zodiacs to cruise amongst the bergs.

You will have around five days to explore the spectacular glaciers, colossal fjords and immense sea cliffs of Spitsbergen. Two days sampling the delights of the mountainous west coast where glaciers calve into Hornsund, Spitsbergen's largest and most spectacular fjord. Numerous sea birds breed on the cliffs and mountain slopes and there are plans for a good long walk across the spongy permafrost.

Along the north coast your ship will push into the Arctic Ocean pack ice in search of Walrus and seals. Along the coast, you visit trapper huts and keep watch for Polar Bears. The polar desert of East Spitsbergen is a completely different world. Subject to ice conditions, you may pass south through the narrow Hinlopen Strait, a channel flanked by austere, creamcoloured slopes rich in fossils. On your walks you may see Eider Ducks, Arctic Foxes and the beautiful Ivory Gull.

Rarely visited, remote and mysterious Bear Island is the southern-most island in the Svalbard archipelago. Here you may zodiac cruise around the lofty sea stacks, hike among the wildflowers or maybe spot an Arctic Fox.

The final leg of the voyage is spent exploring the northern reaches of the superb Norwegian coastline. At Alta you will see 6,000-year old petroglyphs, then sail south to the Lofoten Islands, where cod fishing villages nestle against towering mountains. Watch for passing whales as you explore narrow fjords and zodiac cruise beneath steep bird cliffs alive with Razorbills and Guillemots. Further south, you may land on Torget Island to see the bizarre rock formation Torghatten, a legendary hole in the mountain created by a troll's arrow. Your adventure ends in the historic waterfront town of Bergen.
