Kapitan Khlebnikov
IceBreaker
The Kapitan Khlebnikov is a polar icebreaker built in 1981 by the Wartsila Corporation of Helsinki, and one of only a few in the world. Originally designed for the challenging ice conditions of northern Siberia, the ship was refurbished in 1992 and since that time has carried adventurous travellers to the remotest corners of the world. The icebreaker's double-thickness armour-plated hull has high-tech polymer coatings and underwater air-bubbling systems designed to reduce friction to a minimum. The ship breaks through the ice by riding up onto the surface and crushing it with its massive weight. Powered by 24,000 horsepower engines, her advanced icebreaking technology takes passengers to places other ships fear to sail. No other expedition ship has navigated greater expanses of polar water.
