Orcas, Totems & Grizzly Bears
At the northern end of Vancouver Island, you will find a maze of islands and waterways full of wildlife, amazing scenery and the history and traditions of the Kwakwaka'wakw people.
Each year, millions of salmon returning to spawn pass through Johnstone Strait, also considered a core Orca Whale location. With luck, you may see one of the large groups of Orcas that congregate in the Strait each summer. Sailing aboard your 20-metre ketch you will have excellent views of feeding Grey Whales in the shallow bays and Humpback Whales just offshore. The area is also good for Black Bears, usually spotted roaming the shore feeding on crabs. Only a few Kwakwaka'wakw villages remain inhabited, however the culture and traditions are intact. You will find proud totem poles still standing in the old villages whilst witnessing how the modern Kwakwaka'wakw in Alert Bay preserve their heritage in elaborate carvings, canoes and masks.
