The Kimberley Wilderness
Wild and wonderful, the Kimberley is one of the world's last great wilderness areas. Choose either a 14-day or a shorter seven- or eight-day journey.
The Kimberley is one of Australia's hidden treasures with an immense and complex landscape that encompasses rugged mountains and spectacular gorges, majestic waterfalls and pockets of lush rainforest, unexplained rock art and an astonishing variety of wildlife. Located on the northernmost part of Western Australia and covering some 421,451 square kilometres, an area three times the size of England, the Kimberley is home to only 40,000 people meaning there are fewer people per kilometre than almost any other place on the planet.
Your voyage begins in the pearling port of Broome where you embark your state of the art adventure-cruise vessel, purpose built to access shallow river systems and the ultimate in comfort and style. The tender vessels will ensure you experience the wilderness up close and, to add yet another dimension to the adventure, the vessel sails with its own helicopter. With the ability to carry six passengers in air conditioned comfort, the helicopter provides a unique opportunity to witness the full grandeur of the Kimberley's panoramic landscapes.
The Kimberley's most amazing natural phenomenon is Horizontal Falls where, unlike any other waterfall, the water passes horizontally. You will experience the awesome power of the region's huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience.
Montgomery Reef is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed - 100 square kilometres of coral reef will rise out of the ocean right before your eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world with turtles, dugongs and manta rays.
With stunning red cliffs set behind rainforest and mangroves, the Hunter River is an awesome setting for fishing, mud-crabbing, birdwatching or just simply exploring. Yet another mighty Kimberley river is The King George. Your journey upstream will take you to the King George Falls where you can climb, or take the helicopter to the top of the falls, or just relax with a drink whilst eating fresh oysters off the rocks.
You will see some excellent examples of ancient rock art. The paintings were first recorded by Joseph Bradshaw in 1891 and, although incredibly sophisticated, they originate from an unknown period which some say could be 50,000 years ago. Along the way there will be plenty of time to fish for barramundi, swim in crystal clear billabongs and experience unforgettable picnics in some of the most remote places on earth!
Your final destination will be the frontier port of Wyndham.
