Whales & Bears of South-east Alaska
Alaska is a vast beautiful and truly wild place and you will experience this wilderness as few can ever do. Sailing on a 12-passenger motor vessel, you cruise through narrow tidal inlets to bays where towering glaciers calve into the ocean and sleeping seals drift past on icebergs, anchoring each night in a new secluded bay.
Alaska is one of the few refuges left in North America for the Brown Bear. By midsummer, the salmon start to spawn up the many creeks and, from your raised viewing platform at Anan Creek, you may watch Black, and Brown Bears feeding - a classic wildlife sight. In Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait, Humpback Whales feed on tiny krill in the rich northern waters. To see these whales breach is one of the greatest spectacles in the wildlife world.
For thousands of years, South-east Alaska has been home to the Tlingit, Tshimshian and Haida people and you will visit some of their communities along your route.
