Zambian Highlights
15 days London to London
-
- Day 1. Depart London
- Depart London for Mfuwe, travelling via Lusaka.
- Days 2 to 5. Luangwa Valley [B (Days 3 to 5 only), L, D]
- On arrival at Mfuwe you will be met and transferred to either Tena Tena, Nsefu or Nkwali in South Luangwa National Park for a 4-night stay.
- Days 6 & 7. Kafue National Park [B, L, D]
- Today you transfer by air and road to Lunga River Lodge in Northern Kafue. Covering some 22,500 square kilometres, Kafue National Park is one of the world's largest. Much of the park consists of woodland opening out at intervals onto wide grassy 'dambos' grazed by Defassa Waterbuck, Sable, Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Cape Buffalo and Burchell's Zebra. The northern section of the park is dominated by the vast rolling Busanga Plain fed by the Lufupa River system which recedes in the dry season stranding large herds of Hippo's in shallow pools. This is one of the Kafue's richest wildlife areas attracting a diverse range of antelope including Red Lechwe and deep in the swamps, the elusive Sitatunga. The profusion of game in the park attracts Lion, Leopard and Cheetah in good numbers, whilst for birders this is an unmissable destination offering a great and colourful spectacle.
- Days 8 to 10. Busanga Plains [B, L, D]
- After two nights at Lunga River Lodge, transfer by road to Busanga Bush Camp for a 3-night stay. This small camp has only three chalets (each with en-suite facilities) and accommodates six guests. Set on an island in the heart of the Busanga Plains, the wildlife viewing from here is spectacular with huge herds of Red Lechwe and Puku, Lion, Cheetah, Serval, Caracal, Blue Wildebeest and Side-striped Jackal all possible sightings. The birdwatching is magnificent here too, offering excellent opportunities to see Marsh Owl and the endangered Wattled Crane. This is classic Zambia and a classic bush experience.
- Day 11. Kafue National Park [B, L, D]
- Return to Lunga River Lodge for your final night in Northern Kafue.
- Days 12 & 13. Victoria Falls [B, L, D]
- Continue by road and air to Livingstone to Victoria Falls. Spend your time at Tongabezi Lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River, or on the remote Sindabezi Island amid its watery channels. Tongabezi has been designed to cater for the discerning naturalist who enjoys the atmosphere of a small lodge offering excellent standards of cuisine and service. Quiet and exclusive, just fifteen kilometres from Victoria Falls, the lodge accommodates eighteen guests in five twinbedded cottages and three large, luxury double-bedded 'houses' - Honeymoon, Tree, Dog and Bird House. All are en-suite and are only feet from the water, with private views across the Zambezi. The swimming pool is landscaped into a cliff where meals are served on the deck overlooking the river. Tongabezi is an ideal base from which to visit the Falls. In addition to visiting the Falls themselves you may enjoy birdwatching walks, visits to the gorges, picnic lunches and game-viewing trips by boat and even canoe (for the more adventurous). African Clawless Otter, Augur Buzzard, Rock Pratincole, African Finfoot and Taita Falcon are some of the more unusual wildlife possibilities which may be observed from here.
- Days 14. Homeward [B]
- After a morning's boating or perhaps a leisurely walk, transfer to the airport in time to catch your homeward overnight flight, via Johannesburg.
- Day 15. Arrive home
