Heron Island
Queensland Extension!
Why not complete your stay in Australia with a visit to Heron Island, on the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on earth, stretching along 2,080 kilometres of Queensland coast and covering over 160,000 square kilometres of the ocean floor. It contains an endless variety of corals, over 1,400 species of fish, and an abundance of sea and birdlife.
Heron Island is located in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, amongst the Bunker group of islands, which makes up most of the southern part of the reef. One of the great attractions of Heron Island is that you can snorkel and reef walk directly from the beach without having to take a boat, unlike most other island resorts. The variety and abundance of fish, coral, and other sea life will astonish you. Birds also occur here in sizeable numbers, including terns, shearwaters and reef herons (after which the island is named).
Accommodation here varies from sumptuous suites with private balconies to shared rooms with shared facilities. With all meals included, there will be something here to suit your budget. A swimming pool, restaurant, and lounge make up the public areas, and what with endless miles of beach to explore, interpretative reef walks, island ecology walks, and turtle nesting tours all on offer, the options are almost endless (activities are at extra cost).
