Tundra Lodge polar bear adventure, Canada

Jan Lyndon travelled with us to Churchill in the Canadian Arctic, one of the best places in the world to see polar bears. Since being involved in a serious road traffic accident in 1997, she has been registered disabled, yet this wasn’t going to stop her experiencing the trip of a lifetime. We are pleased to share Jan’s feedback.

Prior to my accident I had been a keen traveller and, despite my disabilities, wished to resume this interest as soon as I was able. I have been fortunate enough to visit numerous countries since, including New Zealand, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Iceland and Canada.

However, it is impossible for me to travel without support workers and there are obvious difficulties of travelling with the repercussions of a serious head injury. When I decided to visit the Arctic primarily for observing polar bears in their natural habitat – involving several flights, a mobile hotel and a tundra buggy – Wildlife Worldwide had to take into consideration the availability of a wheelchair at each airport, bathroom facilities close to sleeping quarters, easy access to support worker and a gluten-free diet. I am delighted to report that all my needs were met and that I enjoyed the trip of a lifetime.

Travelling for me is not about cruise ships, up-market hotels and sun tans, it is about the true learning experience that can only be found when entering another’s culture. To travel to the Arctic and view polar bears in their own environment was a truly beneficial learning experience.  My support worker, daughter and I experienced scenery of breath-taking beauty - I never thought I would gain the opportunity to witness the largest carnivore in such close proximity.

I hope to experience further travels through Wildlife Worldwide.
