Together with Nagarhole and Mudumalai National Parks, Bandipur is part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It supports endangered species including Asian elephant, gaur, sloth bear, striped hyena, and the endemic giant flying squirrel.

Established in 1974, Bandipur is part of the Tiger Reserves' project with a decent tiger population, and is well known for its protected sandalwood trees and beautiful vegetation, under the canopy of the Western Ghats mountains. Within the park, the Kabini reservoir provides a water facility and the grazing ground for hundreds of elephants during the severe and prolonged dry season.
