Bariloche is the beautiful capital city of the Argentine Lake District, located on edge of Nahuel Huapi Lake, inside the national park of the same name.
The city is the perfect base for exploring this natural wonderland, often referred to as the Switzerland of South America. In the winter there is a lively ski scene, centred on the Cerro Catedral area nearby, and in summer the park is a paradise for those who love nature, with opportunities for boating on the lakes, trekking, horse-riding and birdwatching in the picturesque surroundings.
The classic two-day trip to reach Bariloche from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas passes through the exquisite Lake District, skirts Lago Llanquihue past the impressive volcanoes of Osorno and Calbuco to Vicente Perez National Park. After crossing the Andes, the final leg takes you across Lago Nahuel Huapi to San Carlos de Bariloche.
