Kodiak Island’s abundant wildlife includes brown bears, whales, seals, sea lions and otters. Some researchers see Kodiak bears as unique sub-species, due to their startlingly long residence on the island.

Generally larger than their mainland relatives, Kodiak bears have lived on the island for around 12,000 years, and 3,000 live in Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

The island’s wintering wildfowl has a combined population exceeding one million. Year round, some 237 bird species have been recorded here.

In the town itself, sightseeing highlights include the National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Centre, Baranov Museum, Alutiiq Museum, Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Cathedral and Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, where guns were readied to defend against an invasion during World War II.
