Between the months of November and May, the bushes and woods of the Kumarakom Sanctuary play host to some rare migratory birds.

Bird lovers will be delighted to see rare species such as crimson-backed sunbird, Malabar grey hornbill, mottled wood owl, brown fish owl and golden-backed woodpecker. The Vembanad lake body attracts waterfowl like pin-tailed duck, garganey teal and spot-billed duck, together with birds of prey like osprey, marsh harrier and steppe eagle.
