This area harbours immense natural riches split into three protected areas: the Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina, plus two smaller reserves of Covalagua and Las Tuerces.

This is an important habitat for the Cantabrian brown bear (a group of European brown bear living in the Cantabrian Mountains). The population had been divided into two sub-populations due to habitat fragmentation. However, a 2009 study showed a reversal of this division - the two sub-populations are inter-breeding again. Conservation efforts now aim to enhance wildlife corridors to help individual bears move between the two.
