Home to some 30,000 plains game, this huge volcanic crater is the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world. The swamps and soda lake in the conservation area attract an extraordinary number of flamingos, and the plains offer a variety of wildlife including black rhino, Cape buffalo, hippo and wildebeest.

At about 20 kilometres across and 300 square metres in area, the Ngorongoro Crater’s popularity and convenient location on the Northern Circuit mean you won’t be alone, but you can still escape the crowds, particularly at some of the more secluded accommodations. Moreover, the guaranteed sightings far outweigh any negatives.
