Orpheus Island is an unspoilt national park with an 11-kilometre-long coastline, while the turquoise waters around it are part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The island lies only 80 kilometres north of Townsville, but is generally reached by a one-hour helicopter transfer from Cairns Airport, flying over the picturesque coral-studded sea, and spectacular Hinchinbrook Island. Its birdlife includes: orange-footed scrubfowl, yellow-bellied sunbird, sea eagle, osprey, Brahminy kite, reef heron, egret and cockatoo; black tip reef shark are seen offshore.

The island’s key attraction is the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands covers an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres.
