Located a short drive from Liberia on the Pacific coast, Rincon de la Vieja is home to well over 200 bird species. Its low visitor numbers mean that you can enjoy the park without the crowds.

Named after the active volcano at its centre, the park protects the dry forest of Costa Rica's northwest. There are several walking trails, or you can ride horses, or enjoy the hot springs and pools of boiling mud.

Rincon de la Vieja is close enough to be able to visit on a day trip from Tamarindo, although there is more than enough to warrant staying here for a night or two.
