Six million years ago, Udzungwa was isolated from West Africa’s rainforest, so demonstrates a high degree of endemism.

Of its ten primates, four are endemic – including hehe red colobus and sanje crested mangabey. Other endemic species include two bushbabies and birds such as rufous-winged sunbird and Udzungwa partridge.

25% of Udzungwa National Park's plants are unique.
