Things to see in Sri Lanka: Kandy & Udawattakele Rainforest Reserve
This charming lakeside city, former capital of the Kandyan Kingdom, boasts a wealth of historical and cultural treasures, and is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists who visit the Temple of the Tooth. Surrounded by rolling hills, lush valleys, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, its forests are home to the endemic Sri Lanka hanging parrot and Layard's parakeet.
The nearby Paradiniya Botanical Gardens is home to 4,000 plant species of which 300 are orchids. Udawattakele Rainforest Reserve is inhabited by deer, jackals, porcupines and civets. The forest is a haven for birdlife, and you may encounter one of the recurrent bird waves that are a feature of tropical forests.
