Take a long weekend and enjoy an amazing experience, tracking gorillas in the depths of Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
As well as seeing gorillas in the wild, you can take a guided walk in the rainforest, home to several endemic bird species, clouds of butterflies and rare plant life. Walk through the local village, you can learn about community projects, discover the traditions of the Batwa Pygmies and learn about the native tribal inhabitants of the forest, who, though no longer resident in the forest, still practice many of their traditional hunter-gatherer skills.
Trekking through the steep, densely forested hills and then finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation is an inspiring and privileged moment. This is a trip that requires stamina as it may take most of the day to track these amazing creatures.
Day 1: Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Kigale via Nairobi.
Day 2: Arrive Kigale and transfer to Bwindi Forest, 3 nights Bwindi Lodge.On arrival at Kigali airport you will be met by your guide and transferred through the beautiful terraced hills to the forested slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Depending on when you arrive, there may be time before dinner to explore the lodge grounds with its clear mountain stream or visit the local village. Accommodation Bwindi Safari Lodge - 3-nights Your lunch and dinner is included.
Day 3: Gorilla-tracking and photography.Early today you will set off to track gorilla through the steep, densely forested hills. Tracking in the Bwindi forest requires stamina and may take most of the day. There are other activities and excursions available, from guided walks in the rainforest, home to several endemic bird species, clouds of butterflies and rare plants, to visits to the local village to learn about community projects, and discovering the traditions of the indigenous peoples. One day’s gorilla-tracking permit is included in the cost of the trip. Additional permits for a second days tracking should be purchased in advance of travel – subject to availability and at additional cost. Your breakfast, lunch and dinner is included today.
Day 4: Optional activities - gorilla-tracking, guided walks, village visits.You can either choose to go gorilla tracking again (additional permits required, subject to availability) or opt for one of the other, gentler but equally rewarding activities and excursions on offer in and around the park. Take a guided walk with a knowledgeable guide providing insight into this globally important habitat or visit projects such as the Amagara project and Bwindi Community Hospital. Your breakfast, lunch and dinner is included today.
Day 5: Transfer back to Kigale for an overnight flight back to the UK.Your safari ends with your journey back to Kigali. Before transferring to the airport, there maybe time to tour the city and visit the genocide memorial, a moving testimony to Uganda’s past that it has courageously overcome. Transfer to the airport in time for your return overnight flight back to the UK via Nairobi. Your breakfast and lunch is included today.
Day 6: Arrive UK.
You should note: This trip may be enjoyed as a tailor-made trip, or more economically as part of a small group on regular scheduled departures. The price of this trip includes a contribution of US$100 per person to support a non-profit organisation set up by our local supplier in Uganda. This trust supports a variety of community and conservation activities in and around Bwindi, which in turn enhance the livelihood of local communities and help to ensure the survival of the great apes.
