Damaraland is one of the best luxury camps in Namibia and is situated in the Torra Conservancy, on the north bank of the dry valley of the Huab River, arguably Namibia’s most pristine wilderness area.
With sensational views of desert plains, ancient valleys and the soaring peaks of the Brandberg Mountain, Damaraland Camp is 90 kilometres inland from Torra Bay on the Skeleton Coast. The river – which flows only once or twice a year – seldom manages to break through the dunes to reach the ocean.
The camp consists of ten thatched chalets (including one family unit) and a spacious living area with fireplace, bar and swimming pool. Its eco-friendly construction - for which it won a Tourism for Tomorrow Conservation Award - merges modern technology with ancient techniques. There is an outdoor boma and campfire where guests can gather together to relax in the evening and enjoy superb stargazing under Namibia's crystal-clear night skies.
Activities focus on exploring the Huab Valley on guided drives and walks. As rainfall dictates the seasonal movement of wildlife along the river, there are no year-round concentrations of game, but desert elephant are commonly sighted on morning and afternoon drives, as well as gemsbok, greater kudu, springbok, and occasionally lion, cheetah and black rhino. You can also visit the famous rock art site at Twyfelfontein, and Skeleton Coast Park, to see interesting flora such as euphorbias and shepherd's trees. However, for many one of the highlights is the opportunity to talk to local people.
