Carpathian Mountains

The Carpathians stretch for about 1,500km in a distinctive arc shape from the Czech Republic to Romania, and are the continent’s third longest mountain range. They are home to the largest populations of brown bear, wolf and lynx in Europe, as well as large tracts of native forest. Find Out More

Pieniny Mountains

Slovak Karst

The Slovak Karst region, part of the Carpathian Mountain range is best known for its intricate cave complexes, and plains covered in oak and hornbeam forests, with large tracts of beech forest in the north. Tatra Mountains

Forming a natural boundary between Poland and Slovakia, the Tatra are the highest range in the Carpathian Mountains, with about 77% of the range in Slovakia. Protected in both countries, the Tatra are listed as UNESCO World Network Biosphere Reserves. The highest peak in Slovakia is 2,655m, and in Poland 2,499m. Find Out More

When to go

Slovakia is a year-round destination, but the best time to go for birdwatching is spring, when resident birds are joined by migrants and birds are in breeding plumage.

    Mar to May: Spring arrives late in the mountains compared with lower altitudes, and is good for seeing migrant and breeding birds.
  • Summer

    Jun to Aug: Summer is dry and mild, with temperatures in the plains averaging about 25°C, and 14°C in the mountains.
  • Autumn

    Sep to Nov: Temperatures fall from 21°C in September to about 8°C by the end of November, and there’s little rainfall.
  • Winter

    Dec to Feb: Winter brings low temperatures and snow in the mountains, while on the plains it’s milder, with temperatures typically above.
