The Shiant’s are one of north-west Scotland’s hidden treasures. At not much over 143 hectares in length, they are surprisingly varied for their small size with dramatic sea cliffs, lush grasslands and a small beach.

The islands are best known for supporting one of the most impressive seabird colonies in the country with around 300,000 seabirds all attracted to nest on these uninhabited isles each year.

A visit during the breeding season between late April and mid-July is an unforgettable experience with such an abundance of seabirds in all directions and whizzing overhead as they return to their chicks with beaks and stomachs full of fish. Of particular appeal, the Shiant’s puffin population is one of the largest in the UK with around 240,000 puffins nesting on the grassy banks of the islands each year. This is one of the best locations for getting up close with these iconic birds as there is access around much of the islands. Vast numbers of guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and kittiwakes also make good use of the secluded sea cliffs and rocky ledges for nesting, all adding to the seabird spectacle.

The islands themselves also harbour a fascinating geology with volcanic columnar basalt rock protruding out of the sea to form jagged cliffs over 120 metres high.

The waters surrounding the Shiant’s are also recognised as being the most productive for cetaceans anywhere in Britain with minke whales, harbour porpoises, Risso’s dolphins and super pods of common dolphins all a regular sight.
