Inhabited by San people until the 1960s, the dramatic Waterberg Plateau and 41,000 hectares of surrounding land were declared a nature reserve in 1972.
Mammals recorded here include black and southern white rhino, Cape buffalo, giraffe, greater kudu, impala, warthog, tsessebe, sable and roan antelopes, and wildebeest. Even the elusive leopard, cheetah, caracal and side-striped jackals have been seen on the plateau or in the savannah below.
More than 200 species of bird have been recorded here too. Verreaux’s eagle, peregrine falcon and Namibia’s only breeding colony of Cape vultures are among 33 birds of prey found here. Hartlaub’s francolin, Rüppell’s parrot, Bradfield’s swift, Monteiro’s hornbill, red-billed and violet wood-hoopoes, short-toed rock thrush, rockrunner and Carp’s tit are among the park’s other specialities.
