This lodge was conceived as a sustainable community project to develop ecotourism in the isolated Amerindian village of Surama, in the Pakaraima Mountains adjoining the Rupununi savannahs.
Situated on the western edge of the village, the lodge occupies a clearing in the savannah with picturesque views towards the rainforest and surrounding mountains. The accommodation consists of four basic, private benabs (cabins) each with an en suite bathroom, plus a central dining, bar and lounge area where excellent meals are prepared using local produce. Another four basic rooms are available in the traditional village guesthouse.
The lodge was created by the local community, with assistance from volunteers, in the hope of creating employment for the people of the village so that they can remain at home, rather than being forced to leave to seek work elsewhere in Guyana. As well as those jobs created for the day-to-day running of the lodge, interpretative guides have been trained to accompany visitors to the area.
If you wish to increase the opportunity to see wildlife at dawn and at dusk, it may be possible to arrange an overnight stay at an extremely basic hammock camp on the riverbank. Note: this consists of little more than hammocks with mosquito nets slung under a thatched roof.
