Bateleur Safari Camp is a simple yet stylish property within the Timbavati Private Game Reserve with an emphasis on delivering a completely eco-friendly stay, combined with unforgettable wildlife sightings.
Overlooking the Nhlaralumi River and a waterhole, both of which are seasonal, Bateleur is perfectly situated to experience forays into the encompassing bush. The camp has a strong focus on flexibility when it comes to wildlife viewing activities and prides itself on its optional walking safaris. Often combining game drives and excursions on foot, the highly qualified expert team are determined to ensure that Bateleur becomes one of the finest walking destinations in Southern Africa and extended walks can last from three to six hours, depending on guest preference. Tracks are often located from the vehicle by the tracker and armed guide before following them deep in the bush, learning about the smaller intricacies that contribute to life in the Greater Kruger. Another special experience includes learning bushcraft and survival skills perfected by the San Bushmen such as lighting fires, setting snares, making ropes and water containers, all using naturally occurring materials from the surrounding environment. If game drives are more favourable, however, it's possible to have an itinerary that follows the usual format of morning and afternoon drives in an area with very low vehicle density.
The main area consists of the pool, lounge and dining areas on a covered wooden deck with views of the aforementioned water bodies that attract a plethora of game throughout the day, making it a perfect spot for idle game viewing. The perimeter is protected by an ‘elephant fence’ which is in place to stop the megaherbivores from destroying the camp’s water facilities and trees, however any animal smaller than an adult elephant can easily enter the camp, adding to the wilderness experience. The lodge boma completes the communal areas with a space to enjoy fireside dining whilst gazing up at the dazzling African sky and sharing stories of the day’s sightings. The cuisine is delicious, comprised of wholesome South African meals, including braais prepared by the chef on an open fire.
Spacious and comfortable safari units accommodate up to 16 guests with configurations sleeping two to four people, ideal for both families and couples. Built from a gum-pole structure with thatched roof and canvas sides, the guest rooms provide an authentic bush experience with a covered verandah looking out over the surrounding landscape. Each unit possesses en suite facilities with hot shower, flush-toilet and basin and some are also equipped with an interior bath tub and a private outdoor shower.
The minimal impact, ‘leave only footprints’ mentality extends throughout the property with solar power utilised exclusively, a chemical-free swimming pool, produce from the vegetable and herb garden, 100% eco-friendly soaps and much more. The camp was built with no concrete structures and no trees were removed during the construction process, it's believed that if the whole camp was removed, that the area would completely recover in 12 to 18 months. Many of the roads on the property have been removed to create ‘wilderness blocks’ and protect sensitive soils, erosion areas, fragile riverbanks and sodic areas. Despite the road closures, game viewing is far from compromised, as leaving the vehicle at sightings and approaching the wildlife at a safe distance on foot is much lower impact and always an exhilarating experience.
