The architect-designed Cicada Lodge, whose contemporary, sophisticated style fuses modern and indigenous design, makes a luxurious base for exploring the ancient landscape of Nitmiluk Gorge.
18 air-conditioned rooms feature full-length louvered doors onto a private balcony, allowing you the choice of opening your room to the sounds and sights of the native bush or enjoying the cool of your private sanctuary. Each room has views over the surrounding sandstone country above the gorge, and broad valleys that meander through both the high and low country – and features artwork from local indigenous artists whose rich colours blend with and compliment the modern design and fittings.
Located 300 kilometres – or 3.5 hours drive – south of Darwin, and 32 kilometres from the centre of Katherine town, the lodge nestles in the bush, high above the ancient waterways of the Katherine River system in Nitmiluk National Park, which is home to Nitmiluk a.k.a. Katherine Gorge. It has partial views over the river and is just a 15-minute walk from the jetty where gorge cruises start. Facilities include an outdoor pool, restaurant, room service concierge, complimentary WiFi and broadband internet connection; airport transfers are available on request.
Activities available include river cruises, canoe hire, walks and helicopter flights, all of which have a strong cultural aspect, and encourage participants to understand and appreciate the ancient landscape and cultural heritage of the area's traditional owners, the Jawoyn people. The lodge, which remains open all year round, is a joint venture between the Jawoyn and Indigenous Business Australia (IBA).
