Standing on a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean and Tortuguero's main lagoon from which it takes its name, Laguna Lodge is close to the beach where various species of turtle land to lay their eggs.
Founded in 1990, the ecolodge has just over 100 spacious rooms with views of the garden and surrounding rainforest, as well as private bathroom (hot water), ceiling fan, reading lamps and a wooden bench where you can sit and admire the vegetation. The open-air restaurant, which like the bar is decorated with driftwood collected from the beach and treated in the hotel's workshop, looks over the lagoon with fine views of the local boat traffic. The gardens contain a botanical garden and frog pond.
The buffet-style meals include a variety of fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, and coffee/tea and biscuits are available around the clock. Two or three-day all-inclusive packages include boat transport to and from the lodge, all meals, a morning boat trip along the waterways of Tortuguero National Park with a local naturalist guide, a guided visit to the local village and national park facilities. During the turtle nesting season you can take an optional guided night walk to search for these gentle creatures on the beach, which is one of the most important nesting sites in the entire Western Caribbean. Another optional trip is a dawn boat ride through the canals.
