Located on the banks of the Kunene River in the extreme north-west of Namibia and reachable only by light aircraft, Serra Cafema is one of the most remote camps in Southern Africa.
Inspired by the area's Himba people, accommodation consists of eight fully-furnished Meru-style wood and canvas tents with a thatched roof, en suite bathroom, ceiling fan and mosquito nets. Each one is set on spacious, elevated deck beside the river - a great place to relax and soak up the vistas - and blends into the surroundings. The gurgling rapids below camp create a calming atmosphere that lulls you to sleep after a day exploring one of the world's driest and most starkly beautiful regions.
The menu of activities available here consists of wildlife drives, walks and guided quad-bike excursions through the fragile dunes in the Hartmann Valley, so you can to experience the area in its unbridled glory, while taking care to preserve this unique and delicate habitat. Boat trips on the Kunene River make a pleasant change of focus, and fishing can be arranged. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is a highlight, as is a visit to a Himba tribal settlement.
Serra Cafema is reached by light aircraft, three hours flying time from Windhoek.
