Positioned in a prime area for wildlife viewing, the luxurious Shipwreck Lodge’s unique architecture takes inspiration from the enigmatic shipwrecks that line the beaches of Skeleton Coast National Park.
Situated in a remote location, Shipwreck Lodge is the first lodge in the park to be built on the Skeleton Coast itself, set amid sweeping dunes in a raw and rugged wilderness buffeted by the icy Atlantic Ocean.
A rustic opulence can be felt throughout the eight double rooms and two family rooms, each en suite and solar-powered, with the only exception of a wood burning stove for cold winter evenings. The main area consists of an equally innovatively-designed lounge and restaurant with a wide, wraparound deck, and uninterrupted views across the sand all the way to the ocean and beyond.
The lodge takes up a superb location within the Skeleton Coast Central Concession, between the Hoarusib and Hoanib Rivers. This is an area of significant conservation importance for species such as elephant, the elusive brown hyena, and hosts the only other viable lion population in Namibia outside of Etosha National Park; game drives present the perfect opportunity to search for them.
Other activities include quad biking and sand boarding across the dunes (if booked in advance), sundowners atop the sand dunes, beach-combing for whale bones, visits to the geologically-remarkable Clay Castles, and day trips to Mowe Bay to see the enormous Cape fur seal colony with stops at shipwrecks, diamond mines and the remains of the Ventura Bomber.
