Toka Leya comprises 12 spacious en suite safari tents (including three family units) on raised wooden decks beside the Zambezi, linked to an infinity pool and dining, lounge and bar areas by wooden walkways.
The tents boast cool wooden flooring, tasteful décor in earthy hues, climate-control, and a verandah from which to soak up the views and sound of birds, elephant and grunting pods of hippo. The islands in front of the camp form part of the braided channel of the Zambezi River, with several rapids and dense vegetation. The main area is shaded by a canopy of jackalberry, knobthorn and waterberry trees, opening on one side around the focal point of an ancient baobab tree with panoramic vistas.
Scheduled activities (if staying on a fully inclusive basis) include a daily tour to the Victoria Falls (Zambian side), wildlife safaris in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, river cruises, fishing excursions and guided nature walks. Tours of Livingstone town and museum, and visits to Mkuni Market and a local village are excellent ways to learn about the people and culture of this part of Zambia. Other activities on offer at additional charge include sunset cruises, canoeing and whitewater rafting.
Mosi-oa-Tunya Park offers sightings of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala; white rhino have been reintroduced, and the occasional predator is seen. The rich birdlife includes sought-after species such as African finfoot, half-collared kingfisher, African skimmer (seasonal), Schalow's turaco and rock pratincole (seasonal). There is good birding within the confines of the camp itself, or on drives and boat trips.
