Gateway to the Jurassic Coast and home to quiet rivers and some of the best preserved heathlands in England, East Devon is one of the most attractive pockets of the south-west.
Most well known for its fossil rich prehistoric Jurassic coastline, East Devon also holds some of the county’s best wildlife habitats, with quiet countryside and friendly rural villages in its heartland.
Four river valleys, the Exe, Axe, Sid and Otter all flow to the sea and offer tranquil riverside walks and great wildlife. The River Otter is, as you would expect, home to a thriving population of otters but is also home to one of England’s largest populations of wild beavers which have expanded throughout the catchment since their first appearance in 2008. The Axe and Exe Estuaries provide excellent intertidal mudflats and coastal marshes for breeding, wintering and migratory waterbirds.
The Pebblebed heathlands of East Devon are of international importance for their rare plant and insect communities, and also provide refuge for a reintroduced population of the rare smooth snake and breeding Dartford warbler and nightjar.
Ideal for viewing: Eurasian beaver, Dartford warbler, dipper, avocet, European nightjar
