The Gulf of Thailand is surrounded by the country’s northern and western coastlines and supports a variety of habitats, stunning beaches and offers good whale watching.

About the Gulf of Thailand

Covering much of Thailand’s coastline, the relatively shallow and sheltered gulf is a vast inlet of the South China Sea. Five key rivers flow into the Gulf which contributes to its low salinity and variety of habitats. The more sheltered bays such as the Bay of Bangkok support many mangrove forests along the coast.

Whale & dolphin species in the Gulf of Thailand

The shallow waters are important for many fish species, which attract include Irrawaddy dolphins, Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, finless porpoises and a resident population of Eden’s whales. These giants exhibit an extraordinary feeding behaviour in the upper gulf, where they create traps with their mouths for small fish to shelter within. There are also populations of dugong and Omura’s whale within the wider bay.
