The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is located on Iceland’s northernmost peninsula and is home to a population of Arctic fox, one of Europe’s most charismatic mammals.

Since its protection in 1975, this nature reserve is now thriving with local flora and fauna. In particular, Hornstrandir is a sanctuary for Iceland’s only native mammal, the Arctic fox. No hunting is allowed in this reserve so the foxes have been able to thrive without any human intervention. There has no permanent human resident on Hornstrandir since the 1950s and it is also home to more than 250 species of flowering plant and 30 species of nesting bird including the delightful Atlantic puffin.
