Hustai National Park is a jewel among Mongolia’s protected areas. Its rocky hills and grassland are home to Mongolian gazelle, Mongolian lark and a reintroduced population of Przewalksi’s horse.
Thanks to its proximity to Ulaanbaatar, and its wonderful biodiversity, beautiful Hustai National Park is Mongolia’s most loved and most visited protected area. In addition to its striking herds of reintroduced Przewalski’s horses, Hustai is a superb site for many of Mongolia’s iconic steppe species.
In the park’s rocky hills Altai wapiti are common, while Siberian roe deer and argali are also sometimes seen. They are preyed on by wolves. Smaller mammals, including tarbagan marmots, long-tailed susliks and Brandt’s voles, all of which are common, are the prey of the red fox and the handsome steppe polecat. The open grassland which stretches down to the Tuul River is the habitat of the attractive Mongolian gazelle.
Among the bird highlights of this stunning park are meadow bunting, Mongolian lark, cinereous vulture, golden and steppe eagles and boisterous flocks of red-billed chough.
