The country’s highest mountains, the Julian Alps dominate the north-west of Slovenia, providing the only true Alpine habitats in this small but incredibly varied country.

A destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year, the Julian Alps rise up to 2,800 metres above sea level and the habitat varies from alpine forests to meadows and rocky crags. These varied habitats provide an oasis for wildlife in the summer months, wildflower meadows and untouched forest support an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. 

Wildlife of the Julian Alps

The high slopes are home to iconic Alpine mammals including ibex, chamois and marmot, while Alpine chough and golden eagle soar overhead. The rich meadows support smaller delights such as Apollo butterfly and the Alpine longhorn beetle inhabit the beech forests. These forests also support red deer, lynx, capercaillie, Ural owl and spotted nutcracker.
