Krumovgrad is situated in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria. Named after the medieval ruler Krum, the town sits on the bank of the River Krumovitsa amongst dramatic scenery.
The area around Krumovgrad is a volcanic landscape of huge crags stretching as far as the eye can see, interspersed with sparse groves of trees, and includes some of Europe’s finest sites for large birds of prey.
Krumovgrad is a gateway to the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. At Studen Kladenets there is an extinct volcanic crater where a range of charismatic birds of prey may be seen, including golden, eastern imperial, booted, lesser spotted and short-toed eagles, long-legged buzzard, cinereous, Egyptian and griffon vultures.
Among other birds commonly seen in this area are black stork, pallid swift, western rock nuthatch, rufous-tailed and blue rock thrushes, lesser grey, masked, red-backed and woodchat shrikes, black-headed and ortolan buntings, and barred, Sardinian and eastern Orphean warblers.
This landscape also supports an interesting butterfly fauna, including eastern wood white, southern small white and lesser fiery copper.
