A forested park that supports some of the largest populations of elephants and gaur in Thailand. Much of the park remains off-limits for the protection of wildlife, but both elephants and gaur are frequently seen in the grasslands.
Covering 969 square kilometres, this lush forested park covers a mixture of terrains and is home to a wealth of wildlife. The park consists of moist and dry evergreen forest with scattered areas of grassland and rolling hills.
Much of the park is not accessible as it remains strictly protected for wildlife, but a dedicated wildlife viewing route is available by jeep safari north of the park headquarters. This area offers excellent opportunities to observe herds of gaur and Asian elephants as they come to the grasslands and small pools in the late afternoon. It's not uncommon to see both these impressive species side by side.
The wildlife viewing area is only available to visit between 2pm and 6pm, with a peak in activity late in the afternoon. Birdlife is prolific with species such as red junglefowl, Asian openbill stork, red-bearded bee-eater, Indochinese roller, yellow-vented green pigeon and Tickell's brown hornbill among frequently encountered species. Besides the elephants and gaur, mammal sightings are rare, but golden jackals, wild boar and Burmese hares are occasionally spotted.
