Majete Reserve is a wildlife success story. The area was decimated by decades of poaching, but intensive conservation efforts have led to Majete being a spectacular reserve and the only place in Malawi to feature lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and black rhino together.
Covering an area of more than 70,000 hectares, Majete Wildlife Reserve is part of the Great Rift Valley and is one of the country's largest protected areas.
There are large numbers of elephant and buffalo, and black rhino are thriving once again, as well as lions and leopards after their reintroduction. Among the resident antelopes is Africa’s most northernly population of nyala.
Standing beside the Shire River in the south west of Malawi, the area is characterised by sculpted miombo woodland undulating across the hills, which in turn overlook stunning river valleys and riverine forest.
Rock pratincole are seen beside the Shire River, while sightings of Arnot’s chat, white-breasted cuckooshrike and racket-tailed rollers will excite birders.
This park is now a key component of the local economy and is a major employer in the area. Some sustainable use of resources are permitted in Majete for thatching grass and reeds, and some small-scale enterprises are allowed including; bee-keeping, mushroom farming and furniture making, all of which help the local community to be self sufficient.
