Sometimes referred to as the 'Serengeti of the Seas', the waters of Monterey Bay are teeming with wildlife ranging from grey and humpback whales to sea otter and black-footed albatross.

Situated on the west coast of the USA in the state of California roughly a two-hour drive south of San Francisco, Monterey Bay and stretches of coastline are protected as a marine sanctuary. This encompasses a multitude of important habitats such as rugged coves, lush kelp forests, steep ocean canyons and offshore seamounts which are all crucial in supporting the plethora of marine wildlife that can be observed here.

An amazing variety of cetaceans can be regularly observed out in Monterey Bay including grey, humpback and blue whales, Pacific white-sided, Risso's and common dolphins, orca, and Dall's porpoise. Other marine mammals that can be encountered are sea otter, northern fur seal and California sealion. Monterey Bay is also home to a remarkable diversity of birdlife with some of the notable highlights being sooty shearwater, long-tailed skua, marbled murrelet, pigeon guillemot, brown pelican, rhinoceros auklet and black storm-petrel.
