Nevado del Ruiz is one of numerous volcanoes in Los Nevados Natural National Park in the central Andes of Colombia. It is famed for its volcanic and glacial history, biodiversity and scenic beauty.
Thanks to its wide altitudinal range, the park is hugely biodiverse. More than 1,200 species of vascular plants have been recorded here, and a corresponding diversity of animals. Among the highland mammals for which the park is famed are spectacled bear, mountain tapir, northern pudu (the world's smallest deer), western mountain coati and pacarana.
Birds typical of the cloudforest here include red-hooded tanager, plushcap, bar-bellied woodpecker, undulated antpitta, black-collared jay, white-capped dipper and golden-fronted whitestart. In the paramo habitat above the treeline, the unique buffy helmetcrest hummingbird is found.
Ideal for viewing: mountain tapir, western mountain coati, plushcap, undulated antpitta, buffy helmetcrest
