Noosa is the gateway to the beautiful Noosa Everglades, a pristine wilderness of dark, reflective waterways, paperbark forest and wetlands within the wider Noosa Biosphere Reserve.
Just beyond Noosa’s beaches lies a very different landscape: the Noosa Everglades, a peaceful system of lakes, creeks and narrow waterways within the upper Noosa River and Great Sandy National Park. Tea trees, paperbarks, banksias, reeds and water lilies line the tannin-stained channels, whose still surface can create striking mirror-like reflections.
The best way to experience the Everglades is from the water. Guided cruises and canoe journeys travel through quiet wetlands and forest, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Rainbow bee-eaters, sacred and azure kingfishers, brahminy kites, white-bellied sea eagles, cormorants and colourful parrots may all be encountered, while lace monitors, wallabies and other wildlife occur in the surrounding forest.
Combined with Noosa National Park, coastal walking trails and the wider UNESCO-recognised Noosa Biosphere Reserve, the Everglades give Noosa an unusually rich natural dimension alongside its better-known beaches.
