Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Sprawling over 925 square kilometres, on the banks of the Periyar Lake, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a tribute to nature’s bounty and man’s innovation.

The reserve combines great scenic charm, fabulous habitats and a rich biodiversity to captivate any nature lover. The high ranges of the Western Ghats are clothed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah grasslands and support rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and the santucary offers the unique opportunity to watch and photograph wild elephants at close quarters.

Below the thick green canopy roam herds of elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs, lion tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs. Visitors can cruse the lakes or explore the reserve and the ruined Mangaladevi temple – a beautiful old stone temple situated in the heart of the Thekkady forest.
