At Puerto Deseado, the convergence of fresh water and the Atlantic unleashes a wealth of wildlife watching opportunities, and a visit to the breeding rockhoppers of Penguin Island is a must!

Along a remote stretch of Patagonia’s Atlantic coastline, lies a huge estuary, the meeting point of the mighty Atlantic and the fresh water Deseado River. In these shallow waters, the prominent markings of Commerson’s dolphins give away their presence as they swim alongside South American sea lions. Seabirds are prolific with red-legged cormorants lining the rocky shore whilst southern giant petrel, tern, oystercatcher, skua and gulls go about their daily business. Magellanic penguin colonies are many, and they can also be seen sharing nearby Penguin Island with rockhopper penguins, the only spot on continental South America (well, almost) at which they can be found. Darwin stopped here during his travels and if it's good enough for him, well, it's good enough for us!
