Spanning much of Southern Bulgaria and ending in Northern Greece, the Rhodope Mountains provide refuge to some of Europe’s most iconic raptors, mammals and invertebrates.
Topography of the Rhodope Mountains
Situated on the Balkan Peninsula between Bulgaria and Greece, the Rhodope Mountains have remained mostly untouched. The landscape of the Rhodopes includes a medley of rugged peaks, forested hills, tumbling mountain streams and rolling wildflower meadows, which in turn support a stunning array of wildlife.
Wildlife of the Rhodope Mountains
These mountains are an excellent location for observing some of Europe’s raptors including golden eagle, griffon vulture, peregrine falcon and Egyptian vulture. During the spring months, the meadows burst into life with beautiful flowers and a profusion of invertebrates. Mammals can also be encountered in the Rhodopes including golden jackal, fallow deer, wolf and European wildcat, but these and other species continue to be elusive.
