San Juan de Aramá is a charming town located close to the foothills of the Serranía de La Macarena mountain chain and on the edge of the great Llanos plains.
This rural town acts as the gateway to some exceptionally biodiverse landscapes. It sits at the foot of the Serranía de La Macarena mountains, which due to their range of habitats are regarded as a biodiversity hotspot. This isolated area of mountains support many locally unique species. To the east of the town, the vast flat grasslands of the Llanos plains begin, which offer a completely different community of wildlife including giant anteaters, burrowing owls and scarlet ibis flocking to the seasonal wetlands.
The forests near to San Juan de Aramá also support one of the highest densities of harpy eagle in South America, and several long-established nest sites are monitored and protected here. Birdwatching in the verdant forests offers many rewards, from paradise tanagers to miliary macaws and Guianan cock-of-the-rock.
