The largest island in the Azores, São Miguel is the perfect location to experience the natural landscape and abundant marine wildlife of this incredible archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The island of São Miguel is the largest and most populated in the Azores, with most people living in the capital, Ponta Delgada. Here you will find volcanic crater lakes, the most spectacular being the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. The fertile soils have contributed to the economic growth of the island over time - it is home to the only tea plantation in Europe and is the only place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses.
However, it is the wildlife of the sea that takes top billing in São Miguel. In the spring months, more than 25 species of cetaceans can be encountered in the waters around the island which are either resident or migrating through including blue, fin, sperm and sei whale. Other cetaceans that can be observed are Risso’s, bottlenose, striped and spotted dolphin to name just a few.
Interestingly, São Miguel is home to the only endemic bird in the archipelago, the Azores bullfinch found in the eastern regions of the island.
