Son Tra Nature Reserve is a small coastal rainforest reserve in Vietnam, renowned for its unique biodiversity. Resigned to a mountainous peninsula right next door to Da Nang City, this reserve has become a refuge for the endemic red-shanked douc langur.
Son Tra is unique thanks to its location on a peninsula right on the doorstep of Da Nang city, where a lush area of primary evergreen forest stretches from the mountain top to the coast. The peninsula is small, covering 60 square kilometres, but its forests pack in an impressive density of wildlife. Over eighty species of bird, 20 species of mammals, and 30 species of reptiles have been recorded.
The highlight of a visit to Son Tra is the opportunity to see the endangered red-shanked douc langur. It's estimated that between 300 and 1,000 individuals live here, representing the highest density of this now very rare primate. Due to the reserve’s small size and its proximity to the city, the langurs have become accustomed to people, and Son Tra has become the best place to observe this charismatic and colourful primate.
The Son Tra Nature Reserve is also home to other mammals such as rhesus macaque and pygmy slow loris, and offers excellent birding with resident species such as crimson sunbird, green-eared barbet and greater racket-tailed drongo. With so much wildlife crammed into such a small reserve, Son Tra is a very special place to visit.
